Advice on planting a hedge

The first task before planting a hedge is to assess the situation and soil type.based on this you can choose what plant to use-if you have a clay soil in shade then taxus baccata(yew) or crinodendron hookerianum are the best options but if you have a free draining sandy soil in sunthen myrtle(myrtus communis) might be a good option.matching plants with situations-hawthorn(Crataegus monogyna)-A native british tree which has white flowers in may that have a sickly smell,red berries in the autumn and yellow tints as the leaves fall.Its leaves were eaten by children as a snack on the way to school and were called bread and cheese and its berries have a beneficial action on the heart.Its preferred soil and situation are fairly flexible-it will tolerate shade or sun and virtually any soil type from clay to limestone.It is fast growing.Yew(Taxus baccata)-prefers chalk and would probably do best in partial shade.producing edible berrie guitar chords s(the seed is poisonous) and leaves that contain taxol a anti cancer treatment.quite slow growing but its evergreen leaves are definately a good backdrop to other plants.beech(Fagus sylvatica)-deciduous tree with leaves that look beautiful when the light filters through them.Prune in late winter.better to put it in full sun-not sure what sort of soil is best-if its clay add sand and manure if its sandy/limestone add manure or leafmould.Amelanchier canadensis-a beautiful tree from the rosaceae family-it is an all round tree because it has white flowers in the spring,berries in the summer that look like blackcurrants and are loved by birds and lovely autumn colour.prefers acid soil in partial shade.leylandii-famous for causing disputes between neighbours because it grows so quickly.It can make a good windscreen.Also it is cheap and as already stated quick growing.It also has an intriguing smell and can be grown in any situation .
